"Crevace!" yelled Nico Rivas as he went hurtling down into the snowy abyss.
Tab Matthews and Stephanie Myers broke quickly on their skies to avoid following Nico down into the hidden arctic cave.
Nico Rivas, Tab Matthews, and Stephanie Myerswere scientists working in this remote region of Alaska affiliated with the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center.
They were here to put together a climate model.
A climate model is a computerized representation of the five components of the climate sytem; Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Cryosphere, Land Surface and Biosphere.
Such models are based on physical principles including fluid dynamics, thermo-dynamics and radiative transfer.
Ther can be components which represent air movement, temperature, clouds, and other atmospheric properties; ocean temperature, salt content, and circulation; ice cover on land and sea; the transfer of heat and moisture from soil and vegetation to the atmosphere; chemical and biological processes and others.
The scientists were out checking the ice cover on land and sea which is an inherently dangerous business, due to the preponderance of crevaces, lying in wait ready to spring their trap and swallow you into its icy realm.
"Nico! Are you alright," yelled Stephanie as she and Tab stood their ground away from the opening of the crevace.
"My right leg is hurting and I'm a little bruised up but thank goodness I am fine," shouted Nico Rivas.
"I'm about 200 feet down."
"The snow bank broke my fall."
"We're gonna set an anchor and rappel down there with you," replied Stephanie.
"Just hang tight."
Tab and Stephanie secured their rappeling line to their anchor which they had both took turns hammering in and went down slowly to meet their fellow colleague.
To their surprise Nico was up and about looking around with his flashlight.
The light beams illuminated the icy cavern making the stalactites seem like sentinels guarding a long lost kingdom.
"Hey take a look at this!", shouted Nico.
Deep inside the abyss through winding narrow passageways they came out into a great opening where rock walls presented themselves like a great cathedral hollowed out in the cavern.
There were prehistoric paintings on the rocks as far as the eye could see!
Pictures of families eating, playing and what seemed to be worshipping, presented themselves like pages in a book as the flashlight's beams of light revealed their ancestral presence.
Nico placed his hand on a part of a painting that looked like a ritual burial was being performed and all of a sudden the rock started moving!
"What the heck," shouted Tab.
"It's a passageway!", screamed Stephanie.
Sure enough it was.
A long and narrow corridor about 6 feet high and 3 feet wide.
Nico could barely fit but was not about to be left behind.
"This is amazing," said Nico.
"I don't feel any pain in my leg."
The long twisting narrow corridor went on for about 100 feet when it opened up into a larger cave.
"What the heck is that," yelled Nico.
Entombed deep in an enormous ice block was a man!
"This might be the discovery of a lifetime!", shouted Tab.
The man was drssed like a king, an ornate gilded shirt covered his short stout muscled body.
He had large hands and an even bigger head than normal human beings but other than having a sort of squared looking forehead looked altogether human.
"He looks like a Neanderthal," said Nico.
"Call Yu-Ling and have him bring out the van with all of our excavating tools."
It took many hours after Yu Ling arrived to extricate this unbelievable whole remains of a prehistoric man out of its subterranean ice lair yet the scientists were extra careful not to damage their find.
They headed back to their base camp and all agreed that they might have an epic discovery on their hands and were excited to learn more about this ancient being.
They carefully placed blankets on one of the spare beds in their living quarters and all proceeded to sleep the night away exhausted from all the events of the day.
With nary the foggiest idea that the next day would be the one that would hold even greater surprises.
Nico Rivas awoke groggily with his mind still tired and his eyes blurrily focusing in on something that did not seem right.
As he sat up and focused in he saw the Neanderthal Man was sitting straight up and looking right at him!
Without moving his lips he spoke to Nico.
"I am Gol."
"The King of my people the Ammons."
"We ruled your kind many, many years ago."
"Your people were our slaves."
"We taught you everything."
"How to talk, write, hunt, cook, and be civilized."
"Then the climate changed and became too warm for us."
"Many of my people were dying."
"We bult spaceships and left this realm and colonized a new planet."
"I remained and waited for the day for this planet to go back to the Ice Age."
"So my people could return."
"That time is now."
"We shall rule this realm again."
"There is nothing you can do to stop us."
Suddenly Gol pulled out an object from his robe.
He pointed it at the sleeping Stephanie Myers and blasted a ray of light.
Stephanie was completely disintegrated!
Nico yelled, "Wait, please."
Gol blasted him too.
Tab Matthews and Yu Ling awoke unsure of what was happening.
"What's going on?", Yu Ling said quizzically.
Gol proceeded to disintegrate them both with his laserlike weapon.
He then sat down and started meditating loudly.
A short while later as Gol rocked back in forth emitting his strange incantations a loud thunderous noise was heard from outside.
Gol opened the door to a swirling tornado of snow and blinding lights.
When the ear shattering noise of the alien spaceship finally subsided there sat a huge aerodynamic metallic spaceship in the snow.
Four persons came out of an entranceway that opened up on the left side of the gargantuan ship.
They walked towards Gol.
As they got closer it was eerily apparent that it was three men and one woman and they looked exactly like the scientists that Gol had just evaporated.
"Great job Kronus." said Gol.
"You look exactly like the sub-species humans."
"Our battle has finally begun."
"We will turn the planet back to the days of Amman when all around was ice."
"We shall return our people back to their righteous lands and do away with our former slaves who inhabit the planet now."
Just then a telephone started ringing.
Kronus picked it up and said, "Hello."
His voice was the exact tone and inflection of Nico Rivas.
General Martz, Commander of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, was eager to see how the scientists had been making out asked, "How is everything going down there."
"We hadn't heard a thing from y'all all day yesterday."
"Fine General," replied Kronus.
"Don't worry things could not be better."
"It will certainly be much better when we have our full report prepared." said Kronus.
"Thanks Nico," replied General Martz.
"You sound like your in great spirits."
"Thanks and keep up the great work."
"The country is blessed to have such fine patriots as you and your colleagues working on such an important mission."
The General hung up the phone after wishing them all a Happy Halloween.
As Kronus put down the phone the Neanderthals all joined in for a boisterous laugh that echoed throughout the bleak snowy terrain which stood in stark contrast to the shiny silver metallic spaceship brightening up the icy horizon.
"The great work has just begun General!" shouted Gol.
"Do not worry."
Gol pointed the laserlike object to the ship and a direct beam of light shone out from the center top of the ship and proceeded straight up into sky past even the clouds above.
"Ammon!", cried the Neanderthals in unison as they rocked back and forth together in a strangely syncopated rhythm, meditating deeply, fervently shouting again and again in the arctic wilderness.
"Ammon."
